Apple A17 Pro vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2: Apple Makes a Comeback
Apple has finally released its newest phone – the iPhone 15, and its fastest Mobile processor, the A17 Pro.
It has also introduced the “bionic” moniker that complements its pro series.
This A17 Pro is paced with a redesigned GPU, an Efficient CPU, an efficient Neural engine, and so much more, but how does it compare against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Processor?
Let’s go ahead and learn more about the similarities and differences between both phones.
Apple A17 Pro vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2- CPU
Compared architectural-wise, Apple follows a traditional six-core setup .A17 Pro is the first volume-produced chip manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm node on TSMC’s first generation N3B process. This results in 19 billion transactions on a single die. This CPU also includes two high-performing cores that are said to be clocked at 3.70GHz.This gives a 10% performance improvement compared to its earlier cores, which were then the most efficient mobile CPUs, as claimed by Apple.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is built on TSMC’s 4nm node and has an octa-core CPU design that comes with a 1 + (2+2) + 3 CPU cluster design with powerful cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2 GHz,2x Cortex-A715 cores that are clocked at 2.8GHZ .2x Cortex-A710 cores that are clocked at 2.8GHZ nad 3x Cortex -A510 cores that are clocked at 2.0GHz.
So, in terms of CPU performance, Apple has done a better job on its A17 Pro, all thanks to its TSMC’s latest process node.
Apple A17 Pro vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2- GPU
Last year, Qualcomm beat Apple with its Adreno 740. However, this year, Apple has gone all the way to regain its GPU crown. The new Pro-class GPU designed by Apple on shader architecture helps with unparalleled performance and efficiency. The new GPU of A17 Pro has six cores instead of 5, which gives it 20% faster performance when compared to its earlier model. In addition, a new feature called MetalFX Upscaling is introduced, which utilizes both GPU and neural engines to provide high-quality graphics with less power consumption. If you are a gamer, the excellent news is that you can finally play console-quality games like Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding, Assassin, and so on.
SnapDragon has also done an excellent job and supports features like HW-accelerated Ray Tracing,
However, the new 6-core is the clear winner.
Apple A17 Pro vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 2- ISP
ISP refers to the Image Signal Processor. Even though Apple did not talk much about its ISP at its A17 event, its Photonic engine powers most of its camera capabilities like night mode, portals, etc. Apple also mentioned that its Spatial Video recording will be coming to iPhone 15 pro early next year. This will allow its users to relive the memories with incredible depth on Apple Vision Pro. Besides that, you can also take 48MPProRAW images and shoot 4K60 ProRes videos because of its capable ISP.
On the other hand, SnapDragon 8 Gen 2 features an 18-bit-triple ISP architecture that supports 8K HDR videos and can take photos of up to 200MP.
So, regarding raw image processing powers, snapDragon is better; from practical experience, videos shot on an iPhone are much better than on Android.
