Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: Introduction
Signal Private Messenger: Signal offers secure messaging, voice, and video calls with end-to-end encryption. You can create groups, but can’t broadcast messages to multiple contacts at once. Signal also has added support for group calling. Millions of people use Signal every day for free and instantaneous communication anywhere in the world. Signal’s advanced privacy-preserving technology is always enabled, so you can focus on sharing the moments that matter with the people who matter to you.
Telegram: It offers support to groups with up to 200,000 members. Known for its large and massive groups, Telegram offers multiple group-specific features such as bots, polls, quizzes, and hashtags, extensive for large group experiences. It is Pure instant messaging — simple, fast, secure, and synced across all your devices. Over 500 million active users.
Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: User Interface
◼️ User Interface is no doubt a major part of any smartphone application. On Telegram, most of the things such as Call logs, option for creating a new group, heading into settings, and more are stored in the hamburger menu. A button that remains similar to WhatsApp is the floating button on the bottom right for creating new chats, groups, secret chats,s and more. There are no tabs in Telegram and everything is shown on the single screen.
◼️ Talking about Signal, the app UI is more identical to WhatsApp with chats being shown on the main screen but no tabs. Most of the button placements on the main chat screen and within the chat. Forgoing into settings, you can go through the three-dot menu or click on your profile pic on the top left.
For the user interface and user experience, I would give it to Telegram. Telegram has come a long way in terms of UI but it would never be as user-friendly as Signal.
Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: By the Numbers
◼️ Telegram has over 500 million monthly active users and is one of the 10 most downloaded apps in the world.
◼️ Signal had about 20 million monthly active users globally at the end of December 2020. According to a report, the app was downloaded more than 7.5 million times between January 6 and January 10.
In this comparison, Telegram is having around 500 million monthly active users and Signal is having only 20 million monthly active users globally at the end of December 2020. So, in numbers Telegram wins.
Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: End-to-end encryption (E2E)
◼️ Telegram does not offer E2E rather uses something the company calls Client-Server encryption. This means that in theory, Telegram has access to the contents of the messages being sent via its platform but the company claims that it would involve tons of legal paperwork to read these messages. Telegram’s ‘Secret Chat’ option, however, offers E2E.
◼️ Signal is the most-secure app as it not only offers E2E but also doesn’t back up anything on the cloud so there is absolutely no way that the messages can be compromised (unless the device is compromised). Signal also allows users to send and receive messages without revealing the identities of both via a Sealed Senser feature.
In this comparison, Telegram does not offer E2E rather uses something the company calls Client-Server encryption, and as Signal is the most-secure app as it not only offers E2E but also doesn’t back up anything on the cloud so there is absolutely no way that the messages can be compromised. So, in E2E Signal wins
Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: Group chat and Security
◼️ Telegram offers its users the option to connect with a larger group with the option of accommodating up to 200,000 people in a group. It also has a feature where only the admin can send a message to the group’s participants. This is a good feature for business and news portals to share updates and other information. The only downside to this is that Telegram doesn’t offer encryption for its messages in the groups.
◼️ Signal allows up to 1,000 participants in a group with voice and video calling for up to 5 people. It offers E2E for its group chats which are not backed up on the cloud.
In this comparison, You can see that Telegram offers its users the option to connect with a larger group with the option of accommodating up to 200,000 people in a group but doesn’t offer encryption for its messages in the groups but signal allows up to 1,000 participants and it offers E2E for its group chats so it’s on you which one you choose.
Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: Data Collected
◼️ Telegram collects limited information about its users like Phone number, User ID, Contact information.
◼️ Signal, on the other hand, does not collect any other information apart from the user’s phone number.
In terms of data collection, both apps are good. You can choose any app in this comparison, but I prefer Telegram.
Signal Private Messenger vs Telegram: Verdict
According to my comparison, you can see that somewhere Telegram is better while in some cases, Signal is better to use. But overall Telegram is having more users than Signal on the Google Play Store. Telegram isn’t as secure as its competitors in this lineup but offers a host of other features that Signal doesn’t. If you aren’t that concerned about your security and want to target a larger audience then Telegram is the app for you. Signal is the best option for people who want the absolute best security and privacy. It doesn’t store any data and that is one of the reasons that many people are flocking towards the app. Privacy is what everyone wants in today’s world and we can say that both these apps are private in a way that is satisfactory.
